Itinerary

Day 1: Ngorongoro Walking Safari

Your safari begins at Lemala Gate, about 4 kilometers northwest of Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. After a safety briefing from your professional ranger, start a relaxed walk through the forests along the eastern rim of the crater.

Walk Through the Highlands

The trail passes through montane forests filled with native trees, flowering plants and a variety of bird species. Your guide will explain the area’s ecosystem, identify wildlife tracks, and share interesting information about the local environment.

Wildlife and Bird Watching

Buffaloes and elephants may be seen in the forest, while the area is also home to a variety of bird species, making the walk particularly enjoyable for birdwatchers. You may also encounter Maasai cattle herders, offering insight into a traditional way of life that continues alongside conservation.

Visit Quarry Hill

The highlight of the walk is Quarry Hill, approximately 2,365 metres above sea level. From here, enjoy beautiful views of the Ngorongoro Crater floor, one of Tanzania’s most iconic natural attractions. It is an excellent location for photography and taking in the surrounding scenery.

Return Journey

The standard walk lasts about two hours and ends at the main road junction, where your safari vehicle will be waiting. Guests who would like a longer experience can continue walking for an additional two kilometers to Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, extending the excursion to around three hours.

  • June to October: Dry weather, comfortable temperatures, and excellent wildlife viewing.
